What It Feels Like to Discover Music

Do you remember the time before you even knew your favorite band existed? Do you remember hearing one of their songs for the first time? Do you remember how it made you feel?

Music is so important. Listening to music is so much fun. We can learn so much from music - about ourselves, about others, about the world, about the supernatural. Music is one of life’s greatest teachers. There is only one thing I enjoy more than listening to my favorite music, and that is discovering new music.

Whenever I listen to my favorite bands or songs, I inevitably think about how great it would be to forget everything about them, so I could experience the gravity of my initial discovery once again. But then again, that isn’t entirely necessary. There is so much music out there in the universe, and there are so many creative people. I am grateful for that, because I know there is always something out there for me, just waiting for me to discover it.

One of my favorite things, upon discovering a new artist I enjoy, is to listen through their catalog. I think of it as ‘going into the archives’. I love how it feels to search through albums, hoping to discover the deep track that will impact me. Playing my way through an album I’ve never heard before, knowing that the upcoming song could be ‘the one’. And to think that while this album may have been out for years or even decades, there is always that song out there - for me. Just sitting there patiently, waiting for me to hear it, and make it mine. At least it feels that way.
